At one point or another, you have likely found yourself Googling a new business in your area. You might have been looking for the best burger joint, or a new salon to get a haircut. You don’t even have to specify your location — Google will automatically share businesses in your area. You can thank Local SEO for that.

As a business owner, this is an effective way to get your products or services in front of local customers. Local SEO is incredibly targeted because it helps your business to appear on search engines as people in the community are searching for the product or service that you offer. There’s no better time to promote yourself to potential customers than when they need exactly what you are offering.

More and more people are turning to the internet to search for the products and services they need. According to Bright Local, 64 percent of local customers use search engines as their main way to find a local business or service. Often times those searches occur on mobile devices. And those mobile searches often lead to offline purchases.

While Local SEO is a new category on G2 Crowd, there are 16 products in the category. There are already 670 reviews across that category and 525 of those reviews come from two of the biggest players in the Local SEO space — Moz Local and SEMrush.

Moz Local is product of Moz, a major name in the SEO field. Moz came on the scene in 2004 as an SEO consulting agency. The SEO firm has been making moves ever since, including the $10 million secured in Series C funding in 2016. Currently, Moz Local has a 4.3 out of 5 star user review rating across 387 total Moz Local reviews.

What users are saying

One user said this platform “helped their business tremendously.” The Moz Local review went on to say, “It is easy to use, you basically just input all of your correct information and it puts it out to most of the major directories. It basically assists you in ranking better in local search results for a very reasonable price, and not much work is involved.”

Another review said that “Moz Local made [their] life easier.” The user said in their Moz Local review that the benefits they have realized with this tool include, “Solving outsourcing directories to better utilize my time, increasing NAP local listing accuracy across the web and improving local search engine results.”

There are three different Moz Local pricing plans to choose from. The first is the Self-Service plan ($84/year) designed for businesses managing 1-99 locations. Another is the Search Insights plan ($120/year), which is an add-on reporting package available for purchase. The final option is the Enterprise plan (custom pricing). This option is best for businesses managing over 100 locations.

SEMrush started out as a small SEO firm in 2008 with the goal to make online competition fair and transparent. The organization originated as an in-house toolkit that they used for their own marketing efforts. As of Dec. 20, SEMrush has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating across 138 total SEMrush reviews.

What users are saying

One user praised the tool’s customer friendly aspect. That SEMrush review went on to say, “their tools for SEO and SEM are great, especially the audit tool and campaign tracking. I rely on their customer friendly graphs and competitive intelligence to show customers where they measure up to the competition and where they’re performing well.”

Another SEMrush review praised the platform’s keyword monitoring data. The reviewer said, “Thanks to SEMrush you can obtain data on the keywords by which users come to your site. You can also see the positions on search engines that you rank for those keywords. SEMrush can be useful to know what the competition is doing, what keywords it uses, what positions it obtains, what approximate traffic it has, how much it invests approximately in SEM.”

Users can choose from three different SEMrush pricing plans. The first is the Pro plan, offered at $99.95/month. Features include 10,000 results per report and tracking for 500 keywords and 5 campaigns. The Guru Plan is offered at $199.95/month. Features include 35,000 results per report and tracking for 1,500 keywords and 50 campaigns. The final plan is Business plan, offered at $399.95/month. Features include 50,000 results per report and tracking for 5,000 keywords and 200 campaigns.


The Local SEO category is still brand new, with six products still waiting for their first reviews. More products are sure to join the 17 settling into this new category on G2 Crowd.

Moz Local is far and away the leader in the category right now, but it might not keep its number-one seat forever. SEMrush could catch up, or a new contender could join the category and gather reviews left and right. We look forward to seeing how the makeup of the category shapes up.
