The State of B2B Tech in Missouri in 2018

The AIM Institute, a nonprofit committed to building the a community of entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, and talent in the midwest, gave the regions of Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas the moniker “Silicon Prairie.” (Silicon Prairie, I die.)

In addition, in its first-ever “State of the Silicon Prairie Report” in June 2017, the AIM Institute named Kansas City, St. Louis, and Columbia, Missouri as second-, third-, and seventh-best cities for tech startups.

Appropriately, the Missouri startup community is much invested in creating quality, high-paying jobs that leverage regional industries right within the state.

According to the 2014 U.S. Census Bureau’s analysis of economic growth and stability, St. Louis saw a 9.7 percent increase in the total number of newer firms. Kansas City saw a 8.4 percent increase; by “newer firms”, the bureau means “firms operating for no more than three years.” (Startups, in other words.) The implication there is that startups and hungry entrepreneurs leverage the cities’ “greater fluidity of resources, such as capital and talent.”

Back in 2013, the Wall Street Journal reported that a “coalition of local leaders from both the public and private sectors” of St. Louis revealed “plans to raise $100 million over five years to invest in and support local startups.” With that seed funding, the city had obvious interested in establishing the resources and incentives to encourage new business and foster entrepreneurship.

In present-day happenings, Missouri governor Eric Greitens launched the Innovation Task Force in June 2017 to “spur startup activity and innovation” within the state. According to Startland News, “the task force will engage the community [across Missouri] by hosting workshops in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Columbia, and Cape Girardeau.”

Let’s take a look at the tech startup scenes in three Missouri cities: Columbia, Kansas City, and St. Louis.

Columbia

The Missouri Innovation Center, a nonprofit organization that provides support for high-growth business ventures, is based in Columbia. Specifically, it is a life science business incubator. The center desires to contribute to the growth of mid-Missouri; it does that by offering mentoring services and financial support, as well as leveraging research-based innovation. And in 2016, the Center developed the Missouri Tech Accelerator Fund to do just that: help entrepreneurs launch market-changing companies in mid-Missouri.

Kansas City

Kansas City is home to recognizable companies such as Hallmark, Sprint, Cerner and Russell Stover Candies. And back in 2013, the Huffington Post reported that Kansas City has a “growing tech density and … burgeoning startup activity [which] demonstrates that the city has viability as a technology edestination.” Fast-forward to 2017, and the Kauffman Index of Startup Activity has “found that for the third consecutive year, entrepreneurial activity in the Kansas City metro has grown.”

Kansas City is also home to Think Big Partners, a self-identified hybrid of technology-focused accelerator, innovation center and coworking space. Think Big Partners’ community works to help early-stage businesses utilize the resources to launch and grow successfully.

St. Louis

St. Louis is home to a slew of incubators and innovation hubs.

  • Accelerate St. Louis is an incubator for entrepreneurs who wish to tap into both the St. Louis startup ecosystem and St. Louis’ resources. Through Accelerate St. Louis, those who are launching or growing their businesses can find a community through which to develop their venture, attract capital and discover significant networking opportunities.
  • SixThirty is a fintech venture fund that focuses on targeting late-seed fintech startups to so-call “enroll” them in a business development program. Cheekily, the organization is named for the 630 feet that make up the height and width of St. Louis’ famous Gateway Arch. SixThirty also has another seed fund, SixThirty CYBER, that has a specific focus on cultivating cybersecurity startups.
  • Arch Grants is a nonprofit organization that provides grants and pro bono support services to entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of their startups. The organization funds startups who agree to locate their business in St. Louis for at least one year; this is part of its “aggressive effort to inspire the next generation of employers, civic leaders and philanthropists for St. Louis.”
  • T-REX is both a coworking space and a tech incubator located in downtown St. Louis. In addition to supplying enterprise space for startups, T-REX also works alongside similarly minded organizations such as the aforementioned SixThirty and Arch Grants.

Our list is ranked by user satisfaction of a company’s top-rated product. To qualify, a product was required to have at least 10 verified user reviews.

For each qualifying product, we created a company profile to recognize what that company is and does, as well as give a little insight into its history. The data relies on G2 Crowd’s more than 300,000 B2B software and services reviews, or from public data sources such as LinkedIn, Crunchbase or each vendor’s website.
