This report is one of three published by G2 Crowd to highlight the Bay Area.
Each report dives into the overall history, trends and top companies that are guiding tech today. Because of the sheer volume of great developers and the unique environments across this region, we’ve divided our coverage to discuss Silicon Valley, San Jose and San Francisco — to give each the attention it deserves.
The “Capital of Silicon Valley” is home to thousands of startups, many Fortune 500 companies and some of the world’s most successful tech corporations. Silicon Valley is a geographical region and a way of life. Although the ecosystem of “high-tech” extends well beyond Santa Clara County’s borders, it is the origin of all things “silicon.”
San Jose is one of the wealthiest cities in the U.S. and the world. Not only has it completely recovered from the recession, but U.S. News has ranked it as the third best place to live in the U.S. — just behind Austin and Denver. Meanwhile, three San Jose-based companies ranked in Forbes “20 Best Workplaces in California” — Cadence, Cisco and Adobe (two of the three appear in this list.)
Such acclaim comes at a cost. Although San Jose’s rent growth has decreased 1.3 percent since May 2015, the average is still more than double the national average, according to Yardi Matrix. But San Jose has a few tricks up its sleeve to continue to attract companies to the fold, such as slightly cheaper office rent and more mature tech workers.
This maturity and affordability has resulted in an Artificial Intelligence boom. “[San Jose] is fast becoming a capital for artificial intelligence, thanks to lower costs and a more mature and experienced army of its own: older, established tech workers with the required deep skills for AI development,” as reported by The Mercury News. “[L]ocal AI firms hold the promise of contributing to a better urban life.”
San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told the Mercury News, “We are trying to engage many of these companies with those applications of AI that have civic impact, notably in autonomous vehicles where we’ve hosted several meetings with industry leaders to discuss how San Jose could be a platform to demonstrate and test their technology.” Companies like Automation Anywhere, Savioke and NVIDIA are already based in San Jose and Santa Clara and more AI companies are sure to follow suit.
Meanwhile in Santa Clara, the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University was recently named as one of 21 new members of the Partnership on AI to Benefit People and Society (PAI). As advances in AI continue, best practices must be developed, upheld and maintained within the field.
“The Partnership on AI is an organization built on the ethical ideal that AI should benefit people and society,” Brian Green, assistant director of campus ethics programs at the Markkula Center, said. “Given PAI’s ethical mission, the Markkula Center is in exactly the right place, in the middle of great people representing great organizations, who want to deeply engage ethical questions and improve the world.”
Keep your eye on the center of silicon power for the latest developments in AI, machine learning, autonomous machines, smart cities, virtual reality and more.
Note: Only software vendors on G2 Crowd with headquarters currently in the San Jose/Santa Clara area are included in graph.
" Time tracking in the SaaS marketplace is growing like most other tech sectors these days, and constantly changing as well. New players are popping up all the time and more buyers are comfortable with the idea of paying a monthly service fee for a SaaS product like ours. We expect to continue growing as businesses keep trending towards using online products." Joel Slatis, Owner at Timesheets.com
Joomag
"Thousands of high-tech companies are headquartered here with us in the Silicon Valley. Needless to say, it’s a fiercely competitive market. But it’s also a culture that’s evolved and innovated just as much as we have, and that’s exactly why we’ve emerged as an industry-leading SaaS provider. We fit right in." Ruben Vardanyan, Owner and CEO at Joomag
"Silicon Valley continues to be one of the most exciting tech regions in the world. First, we certainly fit into that landscape as the highest quality video communications provider used by thousands of businesses in our area. The tech community is full of early adopters, and they were among our first customers and greatest champions. We also believe it is important to work within the Silicon Valley and larger technology ecosystems through integrations and channel relations to provide the maximum flexibility for our customers. Case in point, our integrations with Slack, Zendesk, Skype for Business, and numerous others." Eric S. Yuan, CEO & Founder at Zoom
