The State of B2B Tech in Denver and Boulder in 2018

Tech has officially joined the mile-high club, and it wasn’t even scared off by Blucifer or the other Satanic imagery in the Denver airport. Maybe all the beer helped, as the Denver area is the largest beer-producing area in the world. But way back in 2010, Boulder had six times more tech startups than the country’s average and twice as many as Silicon Valley (current population sits around 110,000 so that’s no small feat) and the momentum shows no signs of slowing.

I mean, yeah, it’s pretty. Sure, the hiking and biking and skiing are great. There’s tons of beer and weed is legal if you’re into that. So what? The real thrills lie in the startup community that, in 2016, earned a total of $780 million in funding and more than $35 billion in exits. (Yeah, billion with a “B.”)

The Denver and Boulder tech scene is aware that it’s not Silicon Valley, and it’s okay with that. Denver and Boulder are doing their own thing when it comes to startups, and it’s working. Denver is tied with Detroit at No. 8 on SmartAsset’s 2017 list of best cities for women in tech (above both San Jose and San Francisco). Startups are encouraged to push boundaries, and the supportive community in the Denver/Boulder area is always there for inspiration or advice. The local government is doing what it can to encourage growth and provide office space for small startups.

Colorado Tech and Startup Highlights:
  • Built In Colorado is an online hub for all things tech in Colorado including job postings, events, and startup info
  • Boulder Startup Week is a 5-day event in May 2018 that celebrates the startup culture in Boulder
  • Startup Colorado is an entrepreneur-led resource committed to supporting the startup community
  • Boomtown is a startup accelerator that has worked with over 75 startups
  • Innosphere is a high-tech incubator that has helped startups raise more than $220 million in funding
  • Galvanize is a co-working space with workshops, classes, and other services for startups
  • Roost is a coworking space in Boulder with a large community of devs, designers, illustrators, writers, and entrepreneurs
  • Seed Angel Forum is a non-profit event that connects entrepreneurs with angel investors
  • Rockies Venture Club is an angel investing group specifically interested fostering growth in the Rocky Mountains area
  • Colorado Small Business Development Center is a resource that seeks to help small business owners succeed in Colorado
  • InnovatioNews is an information source on tech and other innovations in and around Colorado
  • For more resources, see Rachel Beisel’s comprehensive guide on the Colorado tech scene

Colorado has taken its pioneer spirit and run with it into the 21st century. Tech companies in Denver take up 7.9 million square feet of office space, and that number is only growing. (Consider the fact that Denver only has a population of around 700,000 people and let your mind be blown.)
