The State of B2B Tech in Denver and Boulder in 2018

Tech has officially joined the mile-high club, and it wasn’t even scared off by Blucifer or the other Satanic imagery in the Denver airport. 

Maybe all the beer helped, as the Denver area is the largest beer-producing area in the world. But way back in 2010, Boulder had six times more tech startups than the country’s average and twice as many as Silicon Valley (current population sits around 110,000 so that’s no small feat) and the momentum shows no signs of slowing.

I mean, yeah, it’s pretty. Sure, the hiking and biking and skiing are great. There’s tons of beer and weed is legal if you’re into that. So what? The real thrills lie in the startup community that, in 2016, earned a total of $780 million in funding and more than $35 billion in exits. (Yeah, billion with a “B.”)

The Denver and Boulder tech scene is aware that it’s not Silicon Valley, and it’s okay with that. Denver and Boulder are doing their own thing when it comes to startups, and it’s working. Denver is tied with Detroit at No. 8 on SmartAsset’s 2017 list of best cities for women in tech (above both San Jose and San Francisco). Startups are encouraged to push boundaries, and the supportive community in the Denver/Boulder area is always there for inspiration or advice. The local government is doing what it can to encourage growth and provide office space for small startups.
