Arizona is big.
Not Texas big, obviously; more like sixth-biggest state big. But Arizona can feel pretty empty, almost deserted you might say; only about 7 million people live there. And though the vast majority of the state may be desert, Arizona is an oasis of tech innovation. With such amazing natural wonders like the Grand Canyon and Saguaro National Park, there’s certainly no shortage of inspiration to create something big.
The Arizona tech scene spreads as far and wide as the Sonoran Desert, with company headquarters scattered across the state. With companies such as GoDaddy and PureChat in Scottsdale, ClearVoice and LeadFuze in Phoenix, Prospectify in Tempe, and Infusionsoft in Chandler. Arizona is bustling with startup, tech and B2B businesses.
This desert state is abloom with plans to increase its global investments, business prospects and technological know-how. In 2016, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council released the Metro Phoenix Global Investment Plan, with the goal of enhancing Phoenix’s global competitiveness. That same year, the City of Phoenix was awarded the U.S. President’s “E” Award for its contribution to export trade growth.
“Exporting is essential to the success of the businesses we work with,” Greg Stanton, Mayor of the City of Phoenix, said. “Every day we see the growth of Phoenix businesses, due in large part to exporting. This growth has enabled our Phoenix businesses to add jobs and support their local communities as they expand their bottom line while at the same time making a significant and valued contribution to the expansion of our export economy.”
In addition to growth via exporting, companies such as Uber, PayPal, Weebly, DoubleDutch and more are helping to increase the number of jobs throughout Arizona. According to Forbes, tech jobs rose 18.6 percent between 2010 and 2015, and Phoenix is expected to continue attracting new businesses, startups and entrepreneurs.
Meanwhile, Phoenix ranked among the top 25 rising American technology epicenters in the 2016 Innovation That Matters study. This joint research project compiled by D.C. startup incubator 1776, Free Enterprise and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, “examines and ranks 25 cities’ readiness to capitalize on the inevitable shift to a digital economy.”
Some Arizona-based startup founders believe the success of their companies are in part due to basing their startups in the Grand Canyon State. J.T. Marino and Daehee Park, co-founders of Tuft & Needle, decided to run their mattress store out of Phoenix instead of Silicon Valley.
They wrote in Tuft & Needle Magazine, “ As it turned out, somewhat to our surprise, Phoenix as a city and as a place to start a business was unusually attractive — and more than a little underrated.” They then cite the costs of living and business and Arizona’s work climate as contributing factors.
Regarding prospective employees Marino and Park continue, “There’s surprising diversity in Phoenix — Californians, Midwesterners, East Coast transplants, Mexicans, Native Americans — which adds to the richness of the place and to the crop of people we can recruit from.”
Meanwhile, Heidi Jannenga, president and co-founder of WebPT, believes that the support of the Phoenix community was key in helping her business become what it is today. Jannenga wrote in Medium, “Thanks to an uprising of collaboration among business and community leaders, the disparate tech community has come together to form a more unified voice and vision — and that movement has breathed new life into Arizona’s job market and economic development.”
